At IFRA Expo in Vienna, Oct 10-12, Swedish manufacturer Tolerans is proud to announce a completely new in-line stitching technology that makes it possible to stitch broadsheets, Berliners and quarter-folded printed products in-line – a technique called lateral stitching.

Tolerans has been the world leader in in-line stitching for the past 40 years. The company’s SPEEDLINER series of stitchers has become the most reliable and sold in-line stitchers across the globe.

To date, it has only been possible to cross-web stitch printed products in the press, which has limited the process to tabloid-sized products, A3, A4 and mini-Berliner. But with Tolerans’ new technique, printers can easily stitch broadsheets, Berliner-sized newspapers or quarter-folded products in-line.

- “We are proud to be the first company in the world to introduce lateral in-line stitching to the market,” says Jan Melin, Tolerans CEO. Stitching quarter-folded products in-line is a far more cost-efficient process than stitching off-line, so there are significant cost-savings for printing houses.”  - “We are also proud to finally enable stapling of broadsheet newspapers.” Melin adds. “Our research undertaken with newspaper readers clearly shows they want a newspaper that stays intact. And so do the advertisers.”

Tolerans will next year commercially launch two ribbon stitchers for lateral stitching; a quarter-folder stitcher and a broadsheet/Berliner stitcher. The quarter-folder stitcher is mounted with one cylinder on each side of the conveyor belt, between the chopper folder and the main folder. For broadsheet products, the stitcher is mounted with one cylinder on each side of the former board.

- “We expect to see a large interest in our new technique at IFRA Expo, being the leading event of the news publishing industry,” says Melin.
